Open Text delivered one of the first search engines on Netscape
Communications' home page and provided the original back-end technology
for Yahoo! Open Text Corporation's software and services enable
the world's largest companies to leverage the global reach and openness
of intranets, truly "Putting the Web to Work." Open Text has
a world-wide installed base of 2.5 million users in 3,500 corporations.
Open Text's dramatic growth has been fueled by the rapid market
acceptance of its innovative collaborative knowledge management
system, Livelink, this software enables users to search intranets,
manage documents and work flow, collaborate on projects, and schedule
corporate wide group activities.
Livelink software
Livelink separates itself from the competition by taking a different
approach to enterprise document management. Instead of simply managing
the documents themselves, Livelink focuses on the contents of documents,
creating a true knowledge management system. The most marketable
feature of Livelink is that it can extend existing business processes
by facilitating information exchange among suppliers and buyers
through an extranet. Livelink's most notable technical feature's
are the powerful search engine, and its logical and intuitive interface
with customizable icons and drop-down menus. Many knowledge management
products have become Web-enabled, but Livelink was designed for
the Web from the beginning. Because of the platform independent,
Web-based nature of Livelink, it is easy to implement and it can
be used by everyone in the organization, even if the organization
is geographically distributed. New innovative product modules deliver
a wide range of Web-based functionality to solve specific enterprise
business problems. These include Livelink eLink, Livelink Forms,
Livelink Prospectors, Livelink Desktop Activator for ODMA, Livelink
Activator for BASIS, Livelink Activator for SAP R/3, and the latest
version of the Livelink Spider for Windows NT. The new modular backplane
architecture in Livelink 8 lets Open Text and third parties seamlessly
add new functionality to Livelink. This is accomplished by building
a module using the Livelink Software Development Kit.
The high-tech manufacturing, telecom, utilities, and aerospace
industries are all undergoing rapid change because of regulatory
changes and global competition. They need to be able to respond
quickly to the challenge or lose market share. Livelink helps customers
with geographically dispersed project teams shorten production cycles
and increase competitiveness.

Open Text's future
As the internet matures and with the focus shifting to Biz-to-Biz
web-based solutions, corporations' extranets and intranets will
only become more sophisticated, partly through integration of knowledge
management software. Also, with the increase in the number of companies
with high market capitalization, Open Text's client base of 3,500
will soon balloon. Open Text is leading the worldwide document management
software industry with a 43% market share. Open Text has a history
of acquisitions so you can expect market share to increase.
Open Text has established relations with industry leaders. International
channel programs are already in place with Canon Japan, Siemens
Nixdorf, Unisys and Nissho Iwai. Netscape bundles Livelink with
its SuiteSpot family of server software and Open Text resells Netscape's
Enterprise Server software. Technical partnerships are in place
with Adobe, JetForm, Microsoft, Oracle, Sybase, and others.
Opinion
Open Text is the leader in knowledge management software with 46%
market share, and they are years ahead of their competition since
they decided to base all of their software on the web three years
ago. The focus of the internet is shifting to business to business
solutions as web-based companies are gaining higher market capitalization
and as the web is becoming more and more sophisticated. Open Text
is in the same position that Oracle was in before ERP systems became
the rage. Expect Open Text's client base to expand rapidly in the
near future.
